Hispanic Heritage Month 2008

Sep 1, 2008

Honoring a Timeless Legacy of Service
Through a Series of Events Across America, the U.S. Army Honors Latino Soldiers During Hispanic Heritage Month

Fort Monroe,VA (September 2008) – National and local community leaders gathered in Dallas and San Antonio as part of the U.S. Army's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring Hispanic Soldiers and their contributions to the nation. These two events are the first of seven receptions throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, in which Hispanic organizations such as LULAC, and the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), will act as co-hosts and join the Army in their support of Hispanic Soldiers.

The theme for this year’s events is: "Generations of Selfless Service. The U.S. Army Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month" and will feature guest speakers and a traveling pictorial exhibit which honors Hispanic military heroes, from 1769 to the present. The exhibit provides a glimpse into the contributions of Hispanic Soldiers based on historical and U.S. Army archival information. Invited guests will have the opportunity to speak with Army Heroes, as well as meet with local U.S. Army representatives, who will be on-hand to discuss how the Army participates as a partner in numerous community activities.
Remaining events under this program will occur in the following cities: San Juan, Puerto Rico (Sept. 25), New York (Oct. 7), Miami (Oct. 16), Los Angeles (Oct. 23) and Chicago (Oct. 30).

The U.S. Army’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will also include a Pentagon Tour for national Hispanic leaders in October.  This tour will include meetings with top Army officers and Department of the Army leadership, a lunch with honored Hispanic Soldiers, wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier, guided tour of the WWII Memorial and an evening reception in Washington, DC.
