Ray Drew Named Top Prep Lineman in the Country
(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) Jan. 7, 2011—The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee today announced Ray Drew (Thomas County Central High School, Thomasville, Ga.) as the winner of the prestigious Anthony Muñoz Lineman of the Year award, given to the top prep lineman in the country. The 6’5”, 243-pound defensive end had 15 quarterback pressures, four pass breakups and two quarterback sacks in 2010.
“Drew showcases not only the kind of strengths found in every Army Strong Soldier, but he also demonstrates the traits that are the hallmark of Anthony Muñoz,” said Col. Derik Crotts, Director of Strategic Communications, Marketing and Outreach, U.S. Army Accessions Command. “Anthony Muñoz was a leader to his teammates on the field, possessing the mental, emotional and physical strengths that powered his collegiate and NFL careers.”
Speed, strength, and athleticism fuel Drew’s game. He is a versatile defensive end who can drop into coverage and cover running backs as well as he pressures the quarterback. He is a max-effort player, which should translate well to the college game. As a junior, he was named his region’s defensive player of the year and he was named to the All-Georgia team. Drew is currently undecided about his college choice. In addition, Drew is in the process of becoming an ordained minister and he has preached in his local church for a number of years.
Muñoz is regarded by many as the top offensive lineman in professional football history and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame after playing 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was honored by being named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team. In college, Muñoz starred at the University of Southern California where he was a two-time All-American in 1978-79.
The 2010 Anthony Muñoz Lineman of the Year award recipient was U.S. Army All-American Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul, Minn. Henderson is currently a starting right tackle for the Miami Hurricanes.
