U.S. ARMY OFFERS DOCTORATE DEGREE PROGRAM

FOR CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETISTS

FORT KNOX, Ky., Aug. 20, 2008 – The U.S. Army has expanded the educational programs offered to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to provide Ph.D. level training at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Md.

Under the program, the Army provides the full cost of attending a Ph.D. course of study in neuroscience, pharmacology, nursing science or education for qualified CRNAs. Qualified participants will serve a minimum of six months on active duty before attending their course of study.

Within the U.S. Army, Nurse Anesthetists serve a vital role, providing specialized care for Soldiers and their Families, and military retirees, including general anesthesia, respiratory care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and fluid therapy.

"The Army Nurse Corps continues to provide nurses with advanced education and training opportunities that can help them achieve their professional goals and support our mission of providing the best care to our Soldiers and their Families," said COL Carolyn Jolitz, R.N., M.S.N., chief nurse, The Medical Recruiting Brigade, U. S. Army Recruiting Command.

The program supplements the financial incentives currently in place for Nurse Anesthetists, such as annual special pay ranging from $15,000 - $40,000. Other benefits of being an Officer in the Army Nurse Corps include no-cost, on-post housing or tax-free housing and subsistence allowance; no-cost or low-cost medical and dental care for Officers and their Families; low-cost life insurance; attractive retirement benefits with 20 years of qualifying service; a flexible, portable retirement saving and investment plan similar to a 401k; paid continuing education courses, seminars and conferences; 30 days of vacation with pay each year, and opportunities to travel throughout the United States and abroad.
