SHPE National Conference

Hispanic Partnerships

The Army will serve as sponsor at the 2010 National Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Conference. SHPE was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. Today, SHPE is the leading social-technical organization whose primary function is to enhance and achieve the potential of Hispanics in engineering, math and science. SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

The U.S. Army celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), by creating a comprehensive communication and outreach program that commemorates the diversity theme, honors the contributions Hispanics have and continue to make in service and raises awareness of the Army emphasis on education, opportunities and options available through US Army and leadership development. The nearly 46 million Hispanic Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean celebrate their traditions, ancestry, unique experiences and contributions to America during HHM which runs September 15, 2010 through October 15, 2010.

Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards Los Angeles

The U.S. Army will serve as a sponsor at 2010 Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) Youth Awards. HHF identifies, inspires, promotes and prepares Hispanic role models through national leadership, cultural, educational and workforce programs. The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards were founded in 1998 to identify and promote the next generation of Hispanic leaders and role models by celebrating their accomplishments in the classroom and community. This national leadership program annually identifies and honors young role models from 10 regions who apply for awards in various categories of focus. In 2010 the HHF Youth Awards will be held between September – December 2010 in 10 markets: Houston, Chicago, Washington, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Miami, New York, San Francisco/Palo Alto.

GMiS (HENAAC) Career Conference & Award Show

The U.S. Army will serve as a sponsor at the 2010 Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) Career Conference and Awards Show. GMiS was originally established in 1989 as HENAAC to identify, honor, and document the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science, engineering, technology and math professionals. In 2009 the organization created a new overall name for the organization Great Minds in STEM™. The name change reflects the expanded role of their Education Programs and additional efforts to promote careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in all underserved communities. This name change also recognizes the many careers and contributions in the fields of technology and physical sciences.
