ROTC Cadet Chris Cheng

Cadet Chris Cheng, a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), began his political career as the first Army ROTC cadet to be named student body president at the University of Southern California. Cheng was inaugurated on April 7, 2010 and will serve as president until April 2011.

The Nashville, Tenn. native is currently a junior at USC majoring in international relations and global business. He is also studying Arabic, which he thinks will be a valuable asset while serving in the Army. Cheng is attending college through the Army’s ROTC scholarship, and says he wouldn’t be able to do all that he’s doing at USC without the Army’s support.

Cheng decided to join the Army because of the opportunities available and credits the Army ROTC with teaching him important life skills, such as confidence in public speaking, time management and leadership, that have prepared him for his new role as president. Cheng’s father, who is from Hong Kong, and mother, from Nashville, also supported his decision to serve his country.

During his collegiate campaign, Cheng’s platforms included increasing wireless capabilities across the campus, creating a permanent USC sustainability office with professional and student workers and promoting healthier dining options.

Upon graduation in the spring of 2011, Cheng will be commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army. He plans to continue his education through his Army service by attending business or law school and dreams of one day running for governor in his home state of Tennessee.
