Staff Sgt. Bernard Arroyo

"I love the video game 'Call of Duty 4' and I never thought I'd get the chance to use the technology that's in the game in my real job," said Staff Sgt. Bernard Arroyo, a combat engineer stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The 24 year old Miami, Fla. native joined the Army in May, 2002, because he wanted adventure.  He soon discovered the Army offered him much more.

"I was undisciplined and the Army changed me – it taught me how to respect more," he said. "It also gave me the opportunity to learn about demolitions. I didn't know anything about it when I joined, but now I am a combat engineer and I get to work with these really cool technologies."

Currently assigned to the Army's Evaluation Task Force, Arroyo is involved with the testing and evaluating of the Army's Early Infantry Brigade Combat Team technologies – including the Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (SUGV) and the Class1 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

"I came in knowing they [the Army] had high tech stuff and that was definitely an appeal for me to join, but then when I was trained on the systems I realized how cool it is and how it makes jobs easier and saves lives," Arroyo said.

Arroyo also realizes the training he is receiving will open several doors for him when he is ready to leave active duty.

"The Army is training me to be a subject matter expert on this technology and I know companies will be looking for people like me because I've been trained on these systems," Arroyo said.

The Staff Sgt., having served six years as a soldier, is happy with his Army career and looks forward to serving 20 years in uniform.
